Availability of reference Artemia cysts OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Biometrical, biochemical and food-value characteristics of Artemia nauplii vary with the source of the cyst material. In order to facilitate intercalibration and/or comparison of research conducted with cysts from different sources, homogenous cyst material can now be obtained from the Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium). The reference cysts have been tested extensively for hatching characteristics, biometrics, fatty-acid content, pesticide contamination and effectiveness as larval food for various crustaceans and fishes.

Lembeye, Georgina.
During the expeditions Cimar - Fiordos 2, 3 and 4 (1996, 1997 and 1999), samples of marine sediments were collected in Southern Chile, between Melinka (Lat. 43° 45' S) and Beagle Channel (Lat. 54° 56' S) to study the distribution and abundance of dinoflagellate cysts, particularly the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandriurn catenella. Samples were collected from 33 stations at depths of 1 to 15 meters. The study included photographic record and taxonomic identification of cysts to genus and, whenever possible, to species, with emphasis on the identification of cysts of A. catenella. Cysts from samples collected in cruises 3 and 4, were incubated in f/2-Se culture medium at 13 °C with controlled photoperiod (14:10, L:D), to induce germination and confirm species...

OceanDocs
Akselman, R..
This study was based on four seasonal cruises during 1984 and 1985. It revealed a thermo-haline frontal system formed by the advection of the Coastal Water mass flowing in two branches, one running towards the coast and the other mid-shelf directed. The thermocline developed between late spring and autumn results in a low inorganic nutrient concentration in the upper layer. Nonetheless in winter, a vertical homogeneity and high nutrient concentration were observed. Phytoplankton development presented a typical temperate-seas annual cycle. In winter, reduced populations were dominated by diatoms. The highest biomass concentration in the cycle coincided with the spring blooming, to which Thalassio sira anguste-lineata,Alexandrium tamarense, Heterocapsa...

I - Synthèse bibliographique ArchiMer
Larrazabal, Maria Eduarda.
The study of modern marine dinoflagellate cysts is especially attractive when considering toxic or red tide species. In the case of Vilaine Bay (South Brittany - France) the evolution of bottom marine sediments between 1965 and 1985 (increase of muddy areas) as weIl as summer blooms of Prorocentrum, Protoperidinium and Gonyaulax gave arguments for credit to the existence of cysts corresponding to that generas. After a brief analyse of recent litterature first results of 1986 sampling operation confirm initial hypothesis.

First report on the triggering effect of light on the hatching mechanism of Artemia salina dry cysts OMA

Gómez, L.; Díaz, U.; Fernández, A.; Licea, Y.; Álvarez, I..
Santiago de Cuba bay is an ecosystem eutrophic and vulnerable to FANs events. This work preset the results of monitoring during three year in eight stations located in the less polluted area of the bay, leading to the determination of the possible seasonal distribution and FANs frequency. 117 Phytoplankton species were identifying, which belong to 5 divisions; 28% of these species are reported as potentially toxic and/ or noxious. This zone of the bay classifies as politrophic, heterogeneous and dynamics. It highlights the cysts presence, as well as the occurrence of unialgal "blooms" of Gymnodinium catenatum and Cochlodinium polykrikoides, indicating the presence in the ecosystem of favorable conditions to HABs occurrence with negative impact on the...

Improved use of the fluidized bed dryer for Artemia cysts OMA
Bosteels, T.; Tackaert, W.; Van Stappen, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
A fluidized bed dryer for processing Artemia cysts at the temperatures above 40°C is described and evaluated. The design is directed towards electronic temperature regulation and optimal design of the drying unit. The described fluidized bed dryer proves to be reliable for cyst processing, using inflow air temperatures up to 90°C. The use of this elevated temperature ensures a higher drying rate, resulting in a drying capacity more than 4 times higher than when using inflow air of 40°C. Electronic temperature regulation resulted in a large flexibility of the temperature regime inside the drying unit.

Improvements in the decapsulation of Artemia cysts OMA
Bruggeman, E.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
As described in our previous paper (Sorgeloos et al. , 1977) hypochlorite can be used as reactive agent to dissolve the lipoproteic chorion of Artemia cysts. Two commercial products are available worldwide, i.e. bleaching powder, chloride of lime Ca(OCL)2 and bleaching water NaOCl solutions. In Western Europe the latter product is the cheapest, whereas in the USA and Southeast Asia bleaching powder should be considered. Because the decapsulation process is a much more critical operation with bleaching powder, especially with regard to the viability of the embryos (Bruggeman et al., in preparation; Manzi, personal communication), we studied the use of technical NaOCl solutions in detail.

Increasing cyst yields in Artemia culture ponds in Vietnam: the multicycle system OMA
Baert, P.; Anh, N.T.N.; Quynh, V.D.; Hoa, N.V.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study, one-cycle and multi-cycle culture systems for Artemia in seasonal salt ponds are compared. In one-cycle systems, Artemia is inoculated only once per season, while in multi-cycle systems ponds are drained and re-stocked several times per season. In Vietnam, three-cycle systems gave significantly higher cyst yields than did the one-cycle system. However, after two cycles, systems were not significantly different. Food limitation probably caused the steady decline in cyst yields, as observed in the one-cycle ponds. In these ponds, females have smaller broods (from the second cycle onwards) and during the last cycle the number of adult females is lower than in multi-cycle ponds.

International study on Artemia : 15. Effect of light intensity on hatching rate of Artemia cysts from different geographical origin OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Cooreman, A.; Sorgeloos, P..
Artemia cysts from 4 geographical strains were incubated under standard hatching rates increased with increasing light intensities. The light-intensity threshold at which the maximal hatching rate was attained, varied from strain to strain. Differences in light sensitivity between the Artemia strains studied can, at least partly, be attributed to variation in chorion characteristics. The hypothesis is discussed that light might act as a diapause inhibitor in marine and freshwater branchiopods.

International study on Artemia : 17. Energy consumption in cysts and early larval stages of various geographical strains of Artemia OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of Artemia . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires Artemia this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Over a 24h larval developmental period individual dry weights and energy content of the nauplii decrease with 16-34% and 22-37% respectively.A small but significant correlation exists between the survival rate of starved nauplii and either the energy content of instar I and instar II-III...

International study on Artemia: 3. The use of Coulter Counter® equipment for the biometrical analysis of Artemia cysts: methodology and mathematics OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Steyaert, H.; Sorgeloos, P..
Geographical strains of the brine shrimp, Artemia , can be characterized by the diameter of their cysts, their cyst volume and chorion thickness. The paper describes the routine procedure that has been worked out for an accurate size-analysis of Artemia cyst batches using Coulter Counter® equipment.

International study on Artemia : 41. Influence of culture conditions and specific diapause deactivation methods on the hatchability of Artemia cysts produced in a standard culture system OMA
Lavens, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
Using cyst material produced in an indoor cyst production system from 4 Artemia strains belonging to the species A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA; Macau, Brazil; Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. parthenogenetica (Lavalduc, France), different factors were studied that affect dormancy in brine shrimp cysts. Preliminary experiments under varying (a)biotic culture conditions revealed an interaction between environmental conditions and hatching characteristics. Results obtained under better-defined conditions demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the amount of food available to the adult Artemia populations and the hatchability of their encysted...

ArchiMer
Ultrastructural changes of the chorion were studied in prehydrated Artemia cysts. After incubation for 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours, in hygrostats (under controlled relative humidity, that range from 19% to 99%), the authors observed in cysts that were maintained (for at least 48 h in 99% of relative humidity, some chorionic alveoli containing electron dense structures. They presume that ions and/or molecules migrate during prehydration from inside the cyst to the alveolar layer.

Gonyaulax verior was initially described as Amylax diacantha from Belgian coastal waters a century ago but its detailed morphology needed restudy. Here, we established nine strains of G. verior by germinating cysts or isolating cells from localities from the European Atlantic to the Caspian Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Both cyst and thecal morphology were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. SSU, LSU and/or ITS-5.8S rRNA gene sequences were obtained from all strains. Cells of G. verior have a plate formula of Po, 4′, 2a, 6-7′′, 6C, 6S, 6′′′, 1p, 1′′′′ with an L-type ventral organisation, characterised by two either straight or curved antapical horns of variable length. Cysts of G. verior are oval, smooth and contain one or two yellow...

The use of Artemia cysts in aquaculture: the concept of "hatching efficiency" and description of a new method for cyst processing OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Persoone, G.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Bruggeman, E..
The quality of brands of Artemia cysts should be expressed on a weight basis, namely the number of live nauplii hatching out per unit of weight of product and not as a "hatching percentage" since the latter concept does not take into account the degree of impurity of the material. A standardized method for the determination of the hatching efficiency is proposed. A new methodology for cyst processing has been worked out at laboratory scale, based on a 2-step cleaning (brine and tap water) followed by dehydration (air or brine) or decapsulation and dehydration (brine).

Adult oysters Crassostrea gigas were experimentally fed with Alexandrium catenella and Alexandrium minutum which are responsible for recurrent toxic blooms in French coastal waters. C. gigas produced faeces and pseudofaeces containing intact and viable temporary pellicular cysts of these two Paralytic toxin producing species. When incubated in favourable conditions, these pellicular cysts were able to germinate at high rates (between 74 and 94%) and the resulting vegetative cells divided with growth rates close to the non-ingested cells (control). The toxin profile of the vegetative cells originated from the germinated temporary cysts was analyzed by liquid chromatography/ fluorescence detection. Total toxin content of newly germinated cells was lower than...
